I want to hear better now!

Not every day do you see a patient walking into the clinic enthusiastically insisting on hearing aids. But a few months ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. K, an 85-year-old retired physician with a bright smile and a sharp wit.

Dr. K came in with his son, cheerful and full of energy. Before even taking a seat, he said, Ma’am, I want to buy a pair of hearing aids! Please make sure you give me a good one. I don’t want my friends making fun of me for wasting money.”

He explained that during his evening walks with friends, one of his friends who is a hearing aid user often complained about his device. But Dr. K was optimistic. “I am sure hearing aids work. You just need the right one, fitted the right way.”

We conducted a thorough hearing test, which revealed a severe sensorineural hearing loss in both ears. I recommended a behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aid with ear moulds, which would suit his needs best. During the trial session, Dr. Kr was beaming. He smiled through the entire process, saying, “I’m already hearing so much better!”

After the trial I removed the hearing aids and informed them that the custom hearing aids would be ready in 3–4 days. As I explained the next steps, Dr. Kanwar misunderstood and turned to his son with mock frustration: “I want the device now—I’m not leaving without it!”

His son laughed and said, “Ma’am, this is the best way to prove he actually can’t hear without them!” He then gently reassured his father that the order was placed and they’d return soon for the fitting.

At the fitting appointment, I asked Dr. Kanwar a question that had been on my mind:
“What made you so confident about hearing aids when your friend isn't satisfied with his?”

His reply was simple but powerful:
“Because I know the right hearing aid matters. It only works if it is the right type, with the right settings, and the right person guiding you. My friend bought his online and thus he has no support, no idea how to use it. That is not the hearing aid’s fault.”

Dr. K’s story is very insightful. Many people struggle with hearing loss quietly, or buy hearing aids online without proper testing, fitting, or follow-up. When done right, with the help of a qualified audiologist, hearing aids can genuinely change lives.

Just like Dr. K knew—it’s not just about having a hearing aid, it’s about having the right one, with the right support.
