Types of Hearing Loss: Sensorineural, Conductive & Mixed

Understanding Hearing Loss Types

Hearing loss is classified into three main types based on which part of the auditory system is affected. Understanding the type of hearing loss is crucial for determining the most effective treatment approach.

Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SNHL)

Sensorineural hearing loss occurs when there is damage to the inner ear (cochlea) or the nerve pathways from the inner ear to the brain. This is the most common type of permanent hearing loss.

**Characteristics:** - Usually affects both ears - High-frequency sounds are typically affected first - Speech may sound muffled or unclear - Difficulty understanding speech in noisy environments

**Common Causes:** - Aging (presbycusis) - Prolonged noise exposure - Genetics - Ototoxic medications - Head trauma - Viral infections

**Treatment:** - Hearing aids (most common) - Cochlear implants (for severe cases) - Assistive listening devices

Conductive Hearing Loss

Conductive hearing loss occurs when sound waves cannot efficiently travel through the outer ear, eardrum, or middle ear to the inner ear.

**Characteristics:** - Sounds seem faint or muffled - Own voice may sound louder - Often affects one ear more than the other - May fluctuate with infections

**Common Causes:** - Earwax blockage - Ear infections - Fluid in the middle ear - Perforated eardrum - Abnormal bone growth (otosclerosis) - Foreign objects in ear canal

**Treatment:** - Medical treatment (antibiotics, earwax removal) - Surgery (for structural problems) - Hearing aids (if medical treatment isn't effective)

Mixed Hearing Loss

Mixed hearing loss is a combination of sensorineural and conductive hearing loss. This means there is damage to both the inner ear and the outer or middle ear.

**Treatment Approach:** Treatment typically addresses the conductive component first through medical intervention, followed by hearing aids for the sensorineural component.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which type of hearing loss is most common?

Sensorineural hearing loss is the most common, accounting for about 90% of all hearing loss cases.

Can conductive hearing loss become permanent?

If left untreated, some causes of conductive hearing loss can lead to permanent damage. Early treatment is important.
